Marine Engineer — Career Preview

Keep the world's ships running safely across the oceans

Marine engineers design, build, maintain, and repair the mechanical and electrical systems of ships and offshore vessels — from propulsion engines and boilers to power generation, refrigeration, and safety systems. They work in engine rooms, shipyards, and offshore platforms worldwide.

A day in the life

You start your 4-hour engine room watch, monitoring main engine parameters and responding to alarms. After handover, you supervise the overhaul of a bilge pump, review the fuel oil purification logs, and meet with the chief engineer about the upcoming dry-docking schedule. Life at sea is demanding but the pay and travel are unmatched.
